In most cases, ear wax works its way out on its own, and there is no need to remove it. However, if ear wax is blocking your ear canal and causing discomfort, it may require removal. The ear wax removal method will depend your individual ear and wax type. Our expert clinicians will recommend the most suitable method of ear wax removal at your appointment.
Cerumenolytic agents or wax drops are water or oil-based liquid solutions that help thin, soften, break up, and/or dissolve ear wax. This method is generally used as a first line option against ear wax. Ear wax drops can be purchased over the counter in clinic for $15.50.
Curettage involves the use of an ear curette, a small specialised instrument designed to gently "scoop" excess ear wax out of the ear canal. The instrument can be used to remove ear wax or foreign objects out of the ear that cannot be removed using microsuction techniques.
Microsuction is a dry and effective ear wax removal method used by the expert team at Audika1 to remove excess ear wax. The technique is carried out with the use of illuminated binocular glasses so your clinician can clearly visualise inside your ear at all times whilst a gentle suction device carefully removes ear wax build up. Unlike syringing, microsuction does not involve the use of water, reducing the risk of irritation and infection.
