Like many things, hearing aids require regular cleaning. It only takes a few minutes each day to keep your hearing aids clean and in top shape.
For different manufacturer models, the steps involved in cleaning your hearing aids will vary slightly.1
Here are the basic steps for cleaning your Oticon in-the-canal custom hearing aids yourself at home.

How to clean your Oticon in-the-canal custom hearing aids
Please note: these simple instructions may differ depending on the model of hearing aid that you use.
- Place a cloth on the surface that you will be cleaning your hearing aid on. This is to prevent damage in case you drop your hearing aid.
- Open the battery door and remove the batteries.
- Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe over the speaker unit and shell, removing any wax.
- Take a piece of cleaning string from your cleaning kit and insert it into one opening of your ventilation hole. Push it through until the end appears out of the other opening. Gently pull it all the way through the ear mould. Discard the string. Alternatively, use your multitool or brush to remove wax from the end. T
- ake the wax filter tool from its storage shell. The tool has two pins – one empty pin for the removal of your old wax filter, and one with the new wax filter ready to insert into your earpiece.
- Push the empty pin into the wax filter in the earpiece speaker and pull the old filter out.
- Insert the new wax filter into the earpiece speaker using the other side of the pin.
- Insert your batteries (or new batteries, if necessary) back into your battery door / drawer.

Signs your hearing aid may be blocked with wax2
1. No sound is coming out
If your hearing aid batteries are fully charged or new, the device is turned on and the volume (where you have this option) is adjusted appropriately, but you still can’t hear anything through your hearing aid, this could be a sign the sound channel is blocked with earwax. Clean the sound channel or change the wax filter.
2. Intermittent sound
If sound is only coming through your earpiece intermittently, there could be an earwax blockage. Clean the sound channel and check the wax filter.
3. The volume is not loud enough
If you have your hearing aid turned on and inserted correctly but you still can’t hear properly, the sound channel could be blocked with earwax. Clean the sound channel or change the wax filter. You can also gently brush over microphone inlets to remove any debris.
